Training should be a big part of any dog’s life. Everything you do from teaching boundaries to play is a form of training. Just as we continue to learn throughout our lives, so our dogs continue to learn. Teaching him how to understand, interpret and react to new situations is not only rewarding to him, it gives him the tools to behave appropriately and without undue anxiety or stress.
Thankfully the days of punishment, threat, physical handling and non-reward based training are mostly over.
There is a much better way to teach your dog that is kind, pleasurable for both dog and owner and far more effective that the methods described above.
By using a reward based training programme you are making the whole experience enjoyable for you both. Your dog will look forward to training sessions and will learn and perform the behaviours you are asking because he wants to. Progression to more complex training is taken at yours and your dogs own pace.
By working with your dog in this way you will develop a stronger bond with him and have a happier more content companion.
